sometimes, we all love our pets more than our life. Whenever our lovely pet encounters in some critical conditions or infected with some disease, we all want it back normal and healthy.

Treating Fish Dropsy with Proven Methods, Dropsy Fish Guide

For this purpose, we try to recover it as soon as possible. At any time, whenever your fish suffer from fish dropsy I would recommend you to try these methods to treat and cure your fish.

#1: Isolation

As we know that dropsy is not infectious but it’s better to shift the affected fishes in a separate hospital tank because sick fishes might need some specific tank conditions different than the normal tank to recover.Fish isolation tank Moreover, the tank changes for infected fishes will not affect or harm other fishes in the tank.

Isolating the affected fishes in a separate tank will allow you to do any changes easily without concerning about the other fishes.

However, the temperature and other conditions should be kept close to that in the original aquarium because sudden changes might also lead fishes towards death.

#2: Raising the Temperature

First, fill the tank with the water and keep the temperature same as that of the original tank so that you fishes won’t shock by the temperature changes. Then slowly raise the temperature of the water and keep on doing until you reach the maximum bearing temperature of your inhabitant.

Raise in temperature will stop bacteria from spreading and also kill the already affected harmful bacteria.

Different aquarium inhabitants have different maximum bearing stamina of water temperatures so must research or should know about the most favorable temperature of the inhabitant.
For most of the aquarium fishes like

    • Goldfish
    • Mollies,
    • Guppies,
    • Swordtails,
    • Corydoras,
    • Snails,
    • Shrimp,
    • Platys and Endlers the maximum temperature is 80 degrees Fahrenheit (80°F). So start raising the temperature in the hospital tank by 2 degrees every hour. For better temperature control you must need to install a good quality heater.

#3: Salt Bath

The kidneys of fishes functions to balance the salt levels of their and the tank water. As It affects the kidney of fishes so salt level builds up in their body, so by increasing the aquarium’s salinity, as a result, their immune system will boost up which result in maintaining the equilibrium among both the salt levels of body and water. Hence, this salt bath can help in recovering the fish from dropsy.

salt Bath Using Epsom Salt

So add about 1 teaspoon per gallon of Epsom salt in the water of hospital tank to create a suitable salt bath for your inhabitants. But beware of adding too much salt as it can also result in increased stress levels among fishes. This salt bath can also help in reducing the swelling caused by dropsy.

Epsom salt has magnesium sulfate in it which can help in drawing out the excess water from the fish’s body and this way the swelling can be reduced. Buy Epsom Salt from here

#4: Antibacterial Food

As dropsy can be caused due to many reasons, from which, one of the most common reason is a bacterial infection. In this situation, you should feed antibacterial food to your fish. You can purchase the prepared antibacterial food for fishes or another way is to make a natural antibacterial food at home by preparing a mixture containing fish food mixed with some antibiotic.

The most used antibiotics for treating bacterial infections in fishes are

  • Tetracycline
  • Chloromycetin
  • Kanamycin
  • Kanaplex
Kanamycin & Kanaplex are the two mostly implemented treatments used as an antibiotic. Both of these treatments are prepared to remove different types of bacteria so you should either know the best suitable treatment out of these two or try both of this one by one and check the result.

When the swelling started reducing, appetite reappears, and fishes started swimming actively these symptoms show the recovery and use of the right antibiotic.

It’s better to first go for the Kanaplex treatment.

#5: Precautionary Measures:

  • Use 36 milligrams per gallon and note the sign of recovery for at least 1 week (seven days).
  • In cases of zero improvement move to the next Kanamycin treatment.
  • Add 200 milligrams of it in the hospital tank and continue to notice the improvements for seven days.
Maracyn-Two is another antibiotic which is rich in the spectrum and especially recommended for the gram-negative bacteria. It can be very effective against bacterial infection because it is absorbed by the skin of fishes.

You can purchase these antibiotics from any pet store or from any online store. If your fishes don’t show any improvements even after ten days (10 days) of antibacterial treatment, it means that the reasons for their sickness are something else hence you must consult a professional.

#6: Parasitic Treatment

Dropsy can also be caused due to parasitical infection. It is more difficult to treat any parasitic infection because it has no specific treatment but liquid praziquantel can be used to try against it and it this won’t hurt your fishes to try. It is available in a bottle.

Precautionary Measures:

  • Shake the bottle forcefully before using and add about 200 milligrams per gallon to the hospital tank.
  • Likewise, other treatments, notice the improvements for seven days. Liquid praziquantel is available in most pet stores or you can buy it online. If there is no improvement even after doing all these treatments then it means the situation is even worse than you think and you probably can’t do anything to save your fish’s life.

#7: Consult Professionals

There’s no doubt that dropsy is a very difficult disease and can most of the times becomes worse and can’t be treated at home without consulting any professional or even after consulting the professional.

Fish Professional

If you didn’t notice any improvements even after the salt bath and all the bacterial and parasitic treatment you can still hope for the recovery.

You can consult your local pet store for the treatment. As they are also keeping the inhabitants for sale they must be very professional in treating such conditions or either consult a professional who can genuinely help you treating your inhabitant.

Well, consulting a professional is just another last option, not the optimal solution that dropsy can be treated.

#8: Move back to Original tank (If recovered)

Recovery is not obvious but if your fishes are recovered completely you should move them back to the original tank. Don’t hurry to keep them back, first notice the signs of recovery.

Hospital Fish Tank For Sick Fish

If the fishes become active in swimming and the swelling is vanished, So fish is recovered completely. Even after recovery wait for at least 3 weeks and keep them in the hospital tank.

If the recovery changes continue to stay them move them to the original tank. In these 3 weeks, test them by moving the tank’s conditions back to that of the original ones.

Fish tank for Healthy Aquarium Fish

Start with reducing the salinity of water slowly. Keep noticing the changes until the salt level reaches the same as in the original tank. After that start reducing water temperature slowly after a few hours, so that when you move your fishes they won’t shock or stress out by the sudden changes. And finally after a few hours of reaching the original temperature move your fishes to the original tank.

#4: Can humans get dropsy?

I can answer this question in two ways. The first sense of this question can be “Is it human disease also? So, yes it is also a disease found in humans also. Humans can also be infected by this disease but the conditions of this disease in humans can be obviously little different.

The second sense of this question can be that “Can it spread to humans from fishes?” So, I have already described that dropsy is not a contagious condition so if it doesn’t affect other fishes how can it affect humans.

#5: How we can prevent it?

Yes, it can be prevented. And prevention in this condition is better than cure because it is a deadly disease and most of the time takes lives of your fishes. So, it is better to follow some preventing tips rather than curing this and let it spread and affect your fish.

#8: Can tank conditions result in Sickness?

Yes, certain tank conditions are the main reason in causing stress among fishes which results in a lot of severe diseases like dropsy.
